Definition and Measurement of Residential Segregation According to Massey and Denton (1988), residential segregation â€Å"is the degree to which two or more groups live separately from one another, in different parts of the urban environment†(282). Now this is a pretty general definition, but it gives basic but good insight as to what residential desegregation is talking about. In this paper, I will mostly be focusing on residential segregation as it relates to the black and white populations in relation to one another, although I will be referencing some other races briefly to create a better understanding of concepts or ideas. As far as it goes for what is considered highly segregated measurements and lower segregated measurements, cities with a measurement under 30 is considered well integrated, cities with a measurement between 30 and 60 are considered moderately segregated, and c ities with a measurement over 60 are considered very segregated (Massed and Denton 1993, p. 20). One of the main reasons that the DI is the most widely used because it can be consistently constructed with the census data that is available during the time you are looking at, and this is and easy way to compare censuses numbers from different times in a consistent manner (Boustan, p. 1). As far as it goes for exposure or isolation, meaning, how isolated a certain group or race is, the way that it is typically measured is through isolation measures. Determining â€Å"the percentage of residents black in the census tract of the typical black in metropolitan† areas usually does this, and this can also be done with the white areas, and if the â€Å"whites tend to live in almost all white census tracts, this measure will take on a high value† (Residential Segregation Measurement Project). Ike Wister Turner came into this world on November 5, 1931. He was an American musician, bandleader, songwriter, arranger, talent scout, and record producer. In a career that lasted more than half a century, his repertoire included blues, soul, rock, and funk. As a teenager in high school he led his own music group, the Kings of Rhythm. He employed the group as his backing band for the rest of his life. His first recording, â€Å"Rocket 88† with the Kings of Rhythm credited as â€Å"Jackie Brenston and his Delta Cats†, in 1951, is considered a possible contender for â€Å"first rock and roll song†. Relocating to St. Louis, Missouri in 1954, he built the Kings into one of the most renowned acts on the local club circuit. It was there he met singer Anna Mae Bullock, whom he married and renamed Tina Turner, forming the Ike Tina Turner Revue, which over the course of the sixties became a soul/rock crossover success. Throughout his career Turner won two Grammy Awards and was nominated for three others. Alongside his former wife, Turner was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1991 and in 2001 was inducted into the St. Louis Walk of Fame. Allegations by Tina Turner in her autobiography of her abusive relationship with Turner and the film adaptation of this coupled with his cocaine addiction damaged Turner’s career in the 1980s and 1990s. He claims to have spent more than $100,000 on coke in a two-month period in 1989 . Addicted to cocaine and crack for at least 15 years, â€Å"I was on a 15-year party,† he says. â€Å"This hole in my nose was so bad that when I would go to sleep, it would be hurtin’ so much that I would be tryin’ to get my hand up behind my eyeballs†¦ Pain. The first thing I’d want to do when I got up was get cocaine and put it in my nose. That would deaden the pain. † Turner was convicted of drug offenses, serving seventeen months in prison between July 1989 and 1991. He spent the rest of the 1990s free of his addiction. Near the end of his life, he returned to live performance as a front man and produced two albums returning to his blues roots, which were critically well received and award-winning. Turner has frequently been referred to as a ‘great innovator’ of Rock and Roll by contemporaries such as Little Richard and Johnny Otis. Phil Alexander (then editor-in-chief of Mojo magazine) described Turner as ‘the cornerstone of modern day rock ‘n’ roll’. He spent the 1990s free of his addiction, but relapsed in 2004. Answer: Introduction In a civic world, the importance of the ethical outcome of any activity cannot be ignored. In modern world of business, the large scale companies are also integrating the ethical values into their organizational strategies as those are important for ensuring sustainable profit margin Lal, 2015). Evaluation of morality of the high-end brands with three eminent ethical theories is given bellow: Utilitarian ethics: As mentioned by Gustafson (2013), the Utilitarian ethics, ideated by Jeremy Bentham, states that result of an action is the real measure of whether it is good or bad. The action whose result increases happiness and diminishes pain (for the greatest number of people) is good and produces utility. As mentioned by Lal (2015), the modern day high-end brands are concentrating on the ethical approaches of operation like obtaining employee-oriented policies, transparency in the business procedure and reasonable pricing as they are being helpful in ensuring grater good. By ensuring a good quality of life to the employees the organizations ensure better standard of living to a large number of people and it helps them in ensuring sustainable supply of satisfied labours. Humans have a duty to act morally and doing what is right and avoiding what is wrong. As mentioned by Kant, morality is a matter of following absolute rules which will not appeal to religious considerations but to reason. Thus, Kantian ethics supports the importance of maintaining the legal frameworks for the sake of doing an ethically acceptable business. The modern day organizations follow the legal frameworks regarding the employee benefits, fair trading policy, transparency, corporate governance with a good will and the idea of doing the right thing as well. Thus, the companies follow the legal boundaries and reap the consequence of a sustainable business. Virtue ethics: Finally with the ideology of the Virtue ethics, the integration of moral behaviour within the business operation can be examined in a whole different way. As mentioned by Aristotle, doing the right thing is not enough; to be ethically right, one needs to have correct disposition, emotion and motivation to do the right thing (Sison, 2014).
